bits and pieces around my room

IMG_0494 remember when i made it my goal on my 22 before 21 list (also-- i've accomplished so much of this list!) to buy every piece of furniture in my apartment used? well, it took a lot of time and there's still a long ways to go, but i was extremely happy with how everything came together for my own bedroom how i wanted it to. i still have things i want to find, but for the most part it's perfect in its simple and sparse way which is precisely how i wanted it. and on a college students' budget no less, i was pretty excited that things actually somewhat worked together. my room is my oasis.

blazers are back

DSC_0851
DSC_0846
Once upon a time, I thought I hated blazers. I had a few in my closet but I hated them on me so I never even slipped one on again for five years. Then the other day, thanks to my charismatic adorable friend Kristy, we got a 40% discount at the Gap after she schmoozed her way into the friend discount by the employee there. Score! This blazer would not let me take my eyes off of it and in doing so, I was forced to buy it since never again would I be able to buy a blazer from the Gap for so cheap. So, I did. And in love again I am with blazers (although, as far as posing in them goes, I'm lost.)

Sometimes, I feel really fortunate that the only thing you ever see on my blog is what I put on it; i.e. you can't see what my closet actually looks like right now, the piles of clothes in my bathroom and scattered curling irons and straighteners thrown about on my counters, the dirty clothes buildup in my hamper, or my out of control desk littered with papers, folders, and textbooks. If it wasn't already apparent, I can be a bit of a scatterbrain. And in my most scatterbrain moments, my bedroom/bathroom/closet reflects that.  And right now I'm just really happy at least one corner of my life is tidy.

Oh, yeah. I redesigned my blog layout myself the other day. I have done two for other people now and while I'm no pro, I can do enough to be self-sufficient and support my spur of the moment blog layout anxieties. And of course, it was the polka dots that did it for me. Of course. (P.S. If you ever need blog layout help/advice let me know! I'm in business!)

*Also, I feel the need to publicly thank my lovely roommate for pulling over to the side of the road when I scream "there!" at the green fence I want to take pictures by on the way home. She's the greatest.

a... VLOG?

i'm taking this fine opportunity called winter break to make my yearly (embarrassing) vlog. no, i will not link you to my old ones. and if you find them, please don't tell anyone you did. why do i keep making them if they're so embarrassing a year later...? maybe for that reason alone. because secretly i do enjoy laughing at myself.

BACK TO THE POINT,
my email is open to anything you want to hear me talk about
(embarrassing running into men using urinal stories, thong stories, ex-boyfriends,
ex-friends,
hipster hating stories, surviving the montana tundra stories, and every other
awkward encounter i have)
or
any questions ranging from my shoe size to what the meaning
of life is.

please. ask away. nothing is off limits.
(PLEASE.)

p.s. i won't actually be making it until finals are over so the 18th at the earliest.
at the earliest.

lessons learned the hard way

DSC_1068

i always learn the hard way.
  • spend the extra $10 on a nice mug that has extra insulation so you avoid microwaving hot water for tea making purposes for three minutes so it lasts through physics at 8am.
  • the people worth your time with make you worth theirs.
  • it may not be the hipster twee coffee house, but avoiding a parking ticket because your name is  maggie and you're extremely forgetful about putting an extra quarter in for every extra hour you're there is worth going to city brew (nicknamed "shitty" brew).
  • not giving the weird boy who asked you out a chance might have been a mistake because he has really funny taste in youtube videos (but i'm still not convinced.)
  • skip the 1inch curling iron barrels or bigger. 3/4 inch make those curls last for TWO days. and that's two days of skipping 6:15am alarms to get up and shower.
  • watching the new parenthood right before my midterm wasn't worth the extra three points lost because i forgot to listen to three fifteen second clips of russian songs was not worth it.
  • skipping classes purposefully to allow more time to get ready/review notes before a test only means pressing the snooze button more times than usual and not having time to review notes (are you sensing a theme here!?).
  • subscribing to twitter on your mobile phone when you have an iphone and have the twitter app anyways is a bad, bad idea.
  • the bottom line is, never date someone nor be friends with someone who is too eager to be liked by everyone.
  • don't let your cat use your ponytails as his new favorite toys, they will end up soggy and frayed and completely useless to you now.
  • don't take photos at almost dark or when it's windy (or both) because it makes photos take six times as long and by the time you figure out what's wrong with the photos and teach your roommate to adjust the settings, it makes you make whiney baby faces.
  • and for that matter, don't wear dresses that drape in the front on windy days

casual tuesdays

DSC_0762
DSC_0755
let's get real for a minute. you've heard about my no shower weekends (only when I don't do anything, which is often if we're getting real) and my no shower thursdays (no one looks good for 8am physics anyways and OH YEAH i don't actually care). but sometimes "No Shower (*insert day*)" happens on days when i do have people to see, things to do, and lots of classes to attend. on such days, i put my head into the least graceless bun (someone please send me a link to a messy bun tutorial on youtube because every single one i've tried fails me) on the street and wear my best crew neck sweaters. today, however, i realized.. it's okay. i can do this. how do i know? because.. i'm a ruchette. so obviously i'm really stylish and stuff. and i can do anything i want. so now i'm allowed to try every trend ever, right!? RIGHT!? i'm just kidding. but one can dream. mostly i'm just going to overanalyze every item of clothing now and ask myself if it lives up to Maggie The Ruchette instead of Maggie the 6/7 Days of the Week Unfabulous.

*kidding* i hope you all know me well enough to know i'm rarely serious, especially about myself. besides, you can't put a price on comfort and i was so cozy all day in this sweater and scarf i don't even care.

anyways, i had just about one of the most traumatizing mornings i've had in a while which included clumsily mishandling my scalding 3-minute-long-microwaved tea mug, spilling it all over my arm. instead of ripping off my shirt (the ONE time in my life i could have channeled my inner Jacob the Werewolf and it would have been completely practical), i rolled up my cotton sweater sleeve. which of course, held in the heat and burned my inner elbow skin and the whole rest of my forearm. to which i decided to run into my bathroom and then throw off my shirt and plunge my left arm into the shower blasting cold water. it wasn't really that awful, and mostly i'm telling you all this so that if ever such a circumstance arises, you will remember that i told this story and know to RIP OFF YOUR SHIRT IMMEDIATELY seeing as i can't bend my arm without wanting to cry and will only be taking cold showers for the next three days.

other than that, i'm enjoying the first true dead week i've ever had. mostly, this means reading a lot of Enews online (i'm cable-less because I refuse to give up my daily coffee money) about Will and Kate's baby and Taylor Swift and Harry Styles' New York cohorts. sorry, Taylor, you know I love you a whole lot, but i haven't been able to listen to John Mayer in the same way since Speak Now came out and i just can't let Harry be ruined for me, too.

instagram dump from november!

it's a new month! according to instagram my life looked like this:
november1
1. sparkly shoes are the best kind of shoes if you ask me and especially when they are oxfords. but they also really hurt when you have to buy them half a size too small because they're the last at the store on sale but worth it anyways? i think so.
2. i was getting ready to hang out with one of my friends and realized halfway through curling my hair that it was having a very voluminous day. i started to panic but when it was finished, the frizz and volume ended up working and now i kind of wish my hair could do that every day.
3. over thanksgiving, i got to see my sister a lot. just like the old days, i drove her to her doctor's appointment and i had fun even if the doctor was running 45 minutes late and he ended up being the most awkward person ever. ("sophie is here with her big sister maggie today instead of her parents...")
4. sometimes i discover the best way to achieve comfortable outfits that look like you tried hard that day and then i get so excited i need to tell kylee about it. crewneck solid sweater, printed skirt, fleece lined tights, and boots win every day now. scarf optional but recommended. SO COZY. go try it... now.
5. while walking through downtown moscow i found this bike sitting unlocked outside of a shop in an alley and it was just too photogenic not to have a picture taken of it. and i'll be honest, i wondered for 0.4 seconds if the owner would notice if i rode away on it.
6. recently i've become infatuated with cool socks and it just so happens "menswear" is leaking into my closet in the shape of a lot of button downs and blazers, too. and it just so happens i follow some on instagram who come up with the best poses to showcase these socks and shirts.
november4
1. mother nature was not nice to me last month and for a full day, i laid in bed and watched six episodes of american horror story while devouring raw cookie dough. don't you dare give me a bad time.
2. i went to my best friends' innertube water-polo game and have now decided i want to join. this is going to be disastrous but i'm kind of excited? even though i'm the worst swimmer known to man?
3. have i ever posted a picture of a food that's healthy? no. let's continue this trend. last night, we made oreo brownies. the recipe is here and the pan of brownies is already gone.
4. chai tea became my favorite drink this month after i discovered starbucks' secret. and got a free tumbler and coffee with it at starbucks. score.
5. taking pictures of my friends, another friend of mine who accompanied us took a picture of me taking a picture of them. i smile when i take pictures. it's love.
6. i already miss seattle and so badly wish elanor and i could have had more time to hang out because SHE WAS THAT COOL.
November2
1. coffee is great but it's even better when i finally fill a punch card to redeem my free one. i'm the queen of punch cards and can't even keep them all straight in my wallet.
2. family dinners are somewhat awkward because we seem to become this dysfunctional family that can't eat a meal without embarrassing ourselves but i kind of love it anyways. my dad in sweats with holes in the rear end (yeah that happens), my sister who blushes at every word i say and is the best awkward order-er ever, my mom who pretends she doesn't know us. it's a little bit like the diner scene from little miss sunshine and i love it.
3. do you have snapchat? because if you don't, i've been told i'm pretty good at it. i can contort myself beyond recognition.
4. this shirt is all i want for christmas.
5. i spent a lot of time in the library last week and while walking to the library in a zombie state of numbness, i thought i heard rustling in the bushes behind me. at first i thought it was just my zombie brain, but then i turned around in fear of a serial killer, and saw this deer. two feet away from me. who stood still long enough for me to peel off my gloves, find my phone, and take a picture with the flash on. he still didn't move.
6. i got my bangs cut between study sessions and it was much needed. being able to SEE again is the best. also the best? my hair dresser. and free bang trims. but mostly katie, my hair dresser genius. when i graduate college, i may just have to keep coming back to missoula to get my hair done by her.

the very best way to start december

is being named Ruchette of the month!
huzzah! considering this is where i get literally half of my clothes,
i was pretty excited. jump all around, hug my ruche clothes, and
squeal about it kind of excited.
the best completely unexpected surprise to start off my month.
read the nice things they said about me here!
i'll be honest, sometimes it feels like as big of a part as i make you all a
part of this experience, sitting behind a computer screen really does
feel like i'm alone in it sometimes. i forget people read it,
forget anyone at all is going to read this.
your comments, emails, tweets, ect. are all amazing
reminders.
